Discover how the world’s finest mint makes Peppersmith taste so fresh.

This isn’t just any mint.
This is Black Mitcham peppermint - the finest artisan mint cultivated right here in the UK. Grown on a family-run Hampshire farm by our mate (and mint whisperer) Farmer Ian, this variety has a deep, rich flavour you simply don’t get from the mass-produced stuff. It’s rarer, fussier, and utterly worth it.

The secret’s in the growing

Black Mitcham is a bit of a diva. It only matures when it’s good and ready, usually late July or early August when the fields are bursting with that unmistakable, nose-tingling freshness. That’s when the magic starts. The mint is carefully cut and left to rest for around 24 hours, just enough time to wilt and lose some of its moisture.

The air fills with a green, herbal sweetness that makes you stop and breathe it all in. Then comes the harvest. The leaves are picked up, chopped, and blown into what we call the cooker tub - the starting point for a process you’d never expect in confectionery.

Steam, scent and a little science

Once the mint is ready, it goes through wet steam distillation.
We send steam in, and draw condensation out, breaking down the tiny oil capsules inside each leaf. After about an hour, something magical happens. The mint begins to percolate, releasing its natural essential oil, pure, fragrant, and packed with flavour.

This oil is then collected into drums and left to mellow, just like a fine wine. Over time, the taste deepens and the aroma transforms into something smooth, fresh, and balanced. It’s what makes Peppersmith mints taste, well… properly minty.

Only the good stuff

Most confectionery companies don’t do this. It takes patience, precision, and a real love of flavour. But for us, it’s the only way to make the finest mint you can get. In fact, we were the first ever mint company to win a Great Taste Award and we reckon this careful process has a lot to do with it.

We also take pride in keeping things sustainable. We only use the mint we need, and any leftovers are spread back onto the fields to help next year’s crop grow even stronger.

Straight from Hampshire to your pocket

From Farmer Ian’s fields to your Peppersmith pocket pack, every step is done with care. No shortcuts. No artificial stuff. Just pure, fresh, award-winning mint oil grown right here in the British countryside.

Because when it comes to taste, quality and freshness, we don’t just make mints and gum. We make Peppersmith mints and gum.
